Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries Causes and Treatment in NJ

The Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) is a ligament within the knee. This ligament has an important job. It is responsible for connecting the thighbone to the shinbone. While the PCL is stronger than the better-known ACL, it is still possible to tear it.

Types of PCL Injuries

An injury to the PCL will range in four grades of severity. Grade 1 is a partial tear to the ligament. Grade 2 is also a partial tear, but it results in a more stretched ligament. Grade 3 is when the ligament has been torn and is unstable from the joint. Grade 4 is the most severe, and is when the ligament is torn along with damage to other ligaments in the knee.

Symptoms of a PCL Injury

The severity of your symptoms will most likely depend on the severity of your PCL injury. Symptoms include trouble walking, swelling around the knee joint, mild to severe pain, and a wobbly feeling on the knee. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should immediately see a doctor to prevent further damage.

Causes of a PCL Injury

The primary cause of a PCL injury is typically sports or an automobile accident. It typically occurs when force is exerted onto the knee while it is bent.

Treatment for a PCL Injury

Treatment for a PCL injury will again depend on the severity of the injury. Nonsurgical options include protecting the joint and the use of crutches to prevent any weight bearing – allowing the ligament time to heal. The “RICE” method is always advised (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Surgical options may be necessary if the injury is severe, such as arthroscopic PCL reconstruction. This surgical option may be required based on the characteristics of the tear and is performed in a minimally invasion fashion in order to return the athlete to the highest level of function – restoring normal mechanics though stabilizing the knee.

Rehabilitation for PCL Injury

Sports medicine is suggested if the individual would like to regain the strength they had prior to a PCL injury. Sports medicine involves the use of exercises and stretches catered to each individual. These help to build strength so that healing is accelerated. This is especially important for athletes who wish to begin playing again after a PCL injury.
